Designing your home theater seating can take a bit of time. But getting it right will really enhance your experience later. The seating really is the foundation to the whole home theater you are designing. You want this planning done before you move on to selecting the rest of your home theater.

Spacing Between the Screen and Seating

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, or SMPT, have determined that there is a certain distance between the size of the HDTV screen and the seating at which the audience may become engrossed in the movie that is being watched. The seating arrangement has the audience viewing the movie at a thirty-degree horizontal angle of view with a vertical angle of vision at fifteen degrees.

Take this into consideration to get the maximum viewing enjoyment for each person in your audience.

Personal Preference Will Dictate Seating Location

As a general rule the best distance between the television screen and the audience is between one and a half to five times the width of the television screen. With HDTV seating that is placed too close to the screen, may cause the audience to be distracted by the pixels or lines.

Yet just as in the movie theater, people choose their seats based on their preferred distance from the screen. But take these values into consideration in your design.

Size – Audience, Theater and Television Width

The distance between the television screen and home theater seating becomes very important if you want a small theater that seats two to four people. If you plan to use bolted chairs, your decision is even more significant. At this rate, a larger television screen size gives you more space for an audience but you must build a bigger room to accommodate that audience.

Depending on the intended size of your theater and intended number people who will be watching, you will be able to decide on the size of your television screen. With larger audience, you should also consider the width of your home theater seating rows and the depth of the rows. This will play a large part in the size of the home theater room you need.

With proper planning you can create an excellent balance between all the factors related to creating your perfect home theater. But remember that getting a bigger screen is not always the answer to your dreams.

So whether you design your home theater yourself or get some help, balancing the size of the screen with the dimensions of the room and seating requirements of your home theater will give you the best results.
